The older I get, the more surprised I am by the amazing and intriguing ways that God asks us to be a part of His Work in the lives of His people.
One of the oddest directions that I felt the Lord has laid on my heart, was the placement of “The Prayer Box” in front of Crawford and Breazeale Drugs. This box in its “previous life” served as a real U.S. Mail Postal Box, but the Lord put on my heart to paint it yellow – to the Glory of God- and use it where His people would feel comfortable talking to Him. During one of our weekly prayer meetings, I had a clear understanding that I was to provide a method in which people could anonymously place prayers in this box at any time, night or day, and would be assured that others would be willing to pray with them or praise the Lord with them in a completely non-threatening way. They were not to be required to sign their names or tell us anything about the situation. It’s not about us knowing anything, it’s about God’s Children having others to pray with them for their needs, their praises or their concerns. The people praying over these prayers are not concerned with who the prayer is for or with any circumstances, but are focused and committed to praying with their fellow man in times of need. God’s Word says that if one can put 1000 to flight then 2 can put 10,000 to flight. Heavenly math is more akin to multiplication than addition. We believe in the power of prayer and have seen the fruit of it many times over. We simply believe that people should always be willing to help one another get closer to God.
In the movie “Braveheart” there was a man from Ireland who had such love for his country that he called it “My Ireland”. I believe we should feel the same way about Lincoln County. We should feel that Lincoln County is not just a place where we live and raise our children, but that it is “ours”. I truly believe that Lincoln County will either become what we desire it to be – or else- what we let it become. Am I foolish enough to think we can accomplish these desires alone? Absolutely Not! But with God all things are possible! I believe that God not only works through man to change things, but at times, He sovereignly changes things because of the prayers and needs of His people. It was because of this fact that the prayer box was placed in front of the Drug Store and prayer partners were enlisted to pray over these prayers in complete secrecy. Each prayer request is individually prayed over. It does not matter if the
request is signed or not, our emphasis is not on “who needs what”. Instead, we are centered on allowing God to know our every need and desire, while at the same time giving Him total access to our lives and our community. James 4:2 says that we have not because we ask not. We believe that we must first believe in God and that He answers prayers, then allow others to pray along with us for our needs and the needs of our community. There is much to be accomplished and the Lord is fully able to finish every good work He begins.
Times have certainly changed, even in our lifetime. It used to be common for the head of the household to remain faithful to his wife, teach his children right from wrong and keep his family together despite hard times and poor finances. It used to be common for that person to get tears in his eyes when singing “Amazing Grace” at the tiny church he helped to build. It used to be common for the family to hold hands before a meal and, when he had finished praying, give an encouraging squeeze to each person he held. Things have really changed. Crack cocaine. Drive by shootings. Assisted suicide. Partial birth abortions. Trashy talk shows. Greedy athletes, and grandparents who must raise children because their sons and daughters are on drugs. Thankfully the Lord has kept Lincoln County relatively free of a lot of this, but I still believe the versus in 2 Chronicles 7:14 where it says that “If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will
heal their land.”
There are so many hurting people in our county. Many we know about and many we don’t. Often those we know best, are the least likely to tell us when they feel alone, hurt or have a real need for prayer. Sometimes our best friends have “given up on going to church” or “seeking to get closer to God”. It doesn’t seem relevant in their life because they haven’t experienced the results. Prayer fixes all of this. Every one of us know someone who is having a hard time and deep down they would like to know others are praying for them. This box is just a start. Our goal is for it to spread, until it is commonplace for us to be the real body of Christ in the world. A body that really cares for it’s fellow man and is willing to step out
and pray for that one in need because they are a part of us. A body that is not afraid or ashamed to humble themselves and pray so God will heal our land and our lives and the lives of our brothers.
I have come to realize that Lincoln County is a very special place in the plans of God. He has protected us from many of the evils that have plagued other counties. Even so, we are just barely beginning to get to the place that He desires us to be and like most things where God intervenes, much prayer is required. Become one who prays. May God Bless !
